About

A proper coaching inn with meandering floors, an elm bar, a thick beamed open dining room and an oak panelled snug with bespoke furniture and fabrics. It’s easy to be cosseted in this ancient inn. Nurse a glass of wine with a book by the fires, watch the world go by on the cool terrace, play boules in the garden. All year round there’s somewhere to unwind. Overlooked by St Mary’s Church tower, we’re in the heart of Dedham and Constable Country, a five minute stroll from the Stour river. So on lazy days, simply sit in the village square pondering what route you may take to the cottage that was once Willy Lott’s.

  • Independently owned and run since 2003, you’ll be looked after by a well-established team of individuals who are dedicated to your enjoyment. With a blend of informality and know how, we’re here to be hospitable and make you happy.

Our front of house operations are overseen by Lilla Szanto with Louise Wickens and Lotte Parker-Hooton assisting. The kitchen is headed up by Jack Levine assisted by Emil Styczyński, Sylwester Golonka and Helen Rosenthal. All are supported by a team of individuals hired because they want to give great hospitality.

The Sun Inn is owned by me, Piers Baker and I also own Church Street Tavern in Colchester and The White Hart Inn on Mersea Island.

  • Church Street Tavern

Our second site opened in February 2014 in an equally impressive building to the others. The aim was to bring our style of food, conviviality and hospitality to Colchester. Open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner, CST has a ground floor bar and first floor restaurant. Opposite the Mercury Theatre and Arts Centre, en route into the city centre from St Mary’s car park, it is the perfect spot to be well looked after and have a good time.

  • The White Hart Inn

Our third site opened in June 2022, bringing a bit of Sun Inn and Church Street Tavern island style. Mersea Island is a special place with its beaches, creeks, boardwalks, sailing and oysters. It has a great community many of whom are already friends and customers of our businesses. A more contemporary feel given the nature of the building, there are 6 guest rooms, large restaurant and bar with a vaulted ceiling, lots of window and a walled, south-west facing terrace. Perfect for sundowners after walks along the beach.
